Travel more than doubles risk of blood clots: study

11:20 AM

By Amy Norton

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A study published Monday strengthens the evidence that long-distance travel can lead to potentially fatal blood clots in some people -- showing that the risk grows in tandem with the length of the trip.

In an analysis of 14 previous studies, researchers found that, in general, travel was associated with a nearly three-fold increase in the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) -- blood clots that form in the veins, often in the legs.

If such a clot dislodges and travels to the lungs, it can cause a potentially fatal condition called pulmonary embolism.

Several high-profile deaths have brought attention to the risk of VTE among travelers, particularly those on long-haul flights. Experts think a combination of factors -- including dehydration and hours of sitting in cramped conditions -- explains why some people develop blood clots.

However, not all studies have found a clear link between travel and VTE. To look at the discrepancy, the researchers who conducted the current review, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, analyzed 14 studies involving more than 4,000 cases of VTE.

Some of the studies compared VTE patients with a "control" group of people who had been referred for possible VTE symptoms, but were found to not have a clot -- a comparison that carries the risk of bias because the control group likely has a higher-than-average risk of blood clots.

In other studies, the control group consisted of healthy people from the general population -- which are more likely to capture the true VTE risk associated with travel, explained lead researcher Dr. Divay Chandra of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

When the researchers looked only at those studies, they found that travelers had a nearly three-fold higher risk of blood clots than non-travelers.

What's more, the risk climbed along with the duration of the trip -- rising 18 percent for every two hours of any type of travel, and by 26 percent for every two hours of air travel.

But while the current findings confirm the travel-VTE link, Chandra told Reuters Health, "there is no reason for panic" because the absolute risk to any one traveler is still low.

Still, Chandra said, "people who travel long distances should be aware of the risk of blood clots and learn to recognize the symptoms."

Symptoms of a blood clot in the leg include pain, warmth, swelling and redness in the limb. If the clot travels to the lungs, it may cause sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or a cough that produces blood.

To help reduce the risk of VTE, experts generally recommend that long-distance travelers periodically move around and stretch their legs, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Certain people are at increased risk of blood clots, Chandra noted -- including cancer patients, people who have recently had major surgery such as a joint replacement, and women on birth control pills. They may want to talk with their doctors about any precautions they should take when traveling, he said.

Underwater Hotel

2:36 PM

Visitors to Istanbul will soon have a chance to view the most spectacular ocean views on the planet. A seven floor, seven-star hotel is being built underwater on what was formerly a tobacco factory. There will be exhibition halls, and restaurants, and all rooms will be sea facing.

This isn’t the first such underwater hotel complex in the world. That honor goes to the $500 million Poseidon Hotel which is currently being built off Fiji. The Istanbul hotel differs in that it is being built under the city center, which should make for an interesting experience.

The hotel’s inauguration is set to coincide with the city’s taking over from Linz, Austria as the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010.

Dress Down!

9:40 PM

and... it's 2 days in a row! that i got a dressing down from connie, and i feel like crap.haven't felt so jia lat in say... 2 years?

so i'll have to work late and get the best thing out by tmr morning, the best thing she has ever seen. shit..

sigh. she must be so disappointed at me. the whole HBA was so empathatic towards me, people bugging me to have my dinner, eat more, and pats on my backs, occassional "are you okay?" .sigh! it's okay.. guess everyone needs a little 'down' to go 'up'.

the weight is wearing my shoulders off. i just can't take it anymore. maybe i should be less thoughtful and helpful to people, and do less of things that will not make me a better worker.

Genuine Sacarsm

4:23 PM
Dunno if it was sarcasm or really praise.
But the monster just commended the scraps i threw on the table..
the unfinished presentation board, wow.. i'm happy. but only for a season, as short as 4 minutes.

Someone told me it's so hard to get praised in here. just once. and she said it with so much despair in her voice.

Then i thought to myself, oh i have been.. and by 3 important people. the 3 most high! LOL.
Really thankful to God for his guidance. and the little blessings such as this he showers on me, to make life better and easier to go thru.

this year, i've just been really blessed by God. and i'm beginning to experience 'pouring out' of His blessings, then just showers.

Indeed, all things work for the good to those who love and trust Him. :)

Presentation

1:14 PM
Last week, i was slammed to present to our principal designer from LA.

yesterday, i was called to present to our clients from japan.

This morning, the presentation went well. Sheila, the senior designer said i was nervous, but i did "fantastic". I don't think i did very well. Just good enough to convey my message with sheila's help.

They were a nice bunch! 2 jap guys. One's really cute! haha. 2 architects from the US. there were 12 to 14 of us there! it's was scary!!! somehow connie has the impression i've done it before! No i haven't. i've only presented to like, small time developers. was really stressed up.

Thank God i did not freak out! and i had such a good rest last night.
Sheila says to let me go alone the next few rounds. I guess i'm glad to, as long as i work hard and ask God for strength and wisdom.

Thank You Lord for giving me this 'cake' that i've always wanted! It sure wasn't a small piece. A little rushed, and early. But as long as you show me the way. i'm willing to learn to lead, from the architect true.

Grinz... happy happy! :)

7 days of intense concentration

12:40 PM
So, work started on Monday, it's saturday and im in the office.
I'm also coming down to help, tommorrow, after class.

there are so many things to learn and do here! i'm involved in 3 hotels, 1 resort and 1 showflat!
Everyone, even the director is here to help. It's a good working environment.

Not to mention good pay.
That's what i need to give off to get that pay.

I finished church and YF stuff last night, because of God's grace.
Even met my friend who came back from melb, for about an hour.

Multi tasking is tiring, but not impossible.
I can only continue to seek strength and wisdom from him.

Hired!

1:10 PM
http://www.hbadesign.com/

So i got a job at HBA! woots!!!
Dropped my resume on this website yesterday and went through 3 interviews. And finally hired! Waiting for the contract to reach my email inbox.. If not, i will bug the admin manager again tmr.

Starting my new job on monday, 7th of january.

God has blessed me with much, and this. is really underserved! :) Am so thankful, as this is internationally acclaimed no1 design firm in hospitality design! Will go there and learn as much as i can. As well as suck my staff benefits dry. Hee!

The only boo boo is letting them know that i have a few friends there. Vin says it's a big mistake cos there back stabbers and gossippers around. Then, no one can cover my back since they will always be wary of my 3 friends. How sad. This company is like a war zone!

I visited 3 stores of the building today. did a mental sum. They should have close to 80 staff. Apart from STB, this is the first ID company i've worked in with more than 20 staff! haha!!

Just so excited, but feeling a little disturbed, cos i;ve yet to sign the contract! I will not be fooled again!

One More Day!!!

11:07 PM
One more day of work to christmas weekend!!! Weee!!!

Sorry in advance to all who see this and don't receive a christmas card! haha, i really did mean to send out 40 cards. have been trying to finish writing them, and am half done. Hee. today, to my horror, i found out that my special sized envelopes have been sealed thanks to the heat of putting them in my office bag. haha. see, i really tried, even to write them during lunch. But i totally gave up now.

Just came back from prayer meeting, i'm starting to get discouraged... i'm trying. woke up at 2pm, practised a little guitar, and went to church to help with some adminstrative work. Wow so much to do! I finished 3 ppts yesterday, namely for 23, 24 and christmas day. phew...

No new clothes for christmas this year for i am very broke. and im spending it on more meaningful things alright.
